Born and raised in Prince George, I have seen this city prosper and thrive. I can remember the addition of many civic facilities such as the Multiplex (now CN Center) and the Civic Center. Though I was young then, I can still recall the positivity, optimism and excitement felt throughout the city as we added a new University and a WHL Hockey club. I fondly remember a bustling downtown with line ups out the doors of multiple clubs, packed restaurants and pubs, where the only people on the streets were patrons walking to support one local business after the other. Yes Prince George was once a progressive, safe, thriving city I was proud to call my home.
Unfortunately, I have also watched the City of Prince George plummet to the mess it has become today. A bloated and ineffective city hall, an unaccountable and incompetent senior management team, a filthy downtown riddled with homelessness/mental health disorders/addiction/crime, and a completely out of touch council. How out of touch is council? Well here's just one example; while the people of Prince George are struggling to put gas in their vehicles and food on the table, while seniors and single parents are battling the highest inflation in over 4 decades, the elitists on city council just voted themselves another raise! And guess who gets to pay for it it? YOU DO! Now that's out of touch!
Prince George should be one of the richest and most prosperous cities in the nation. We are the hub for some of the largest infrastructure projects in the entire country. From the LNG Canada Project, to the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline, to the Trans Mountain Pipeline, to the Site C Clean Energy Project, we are surrounded with economic opportunity. Not to mention we are a natural resource powerhouse. We have sawmills, pulpmills, logging, forestry, mines, chemical plants, refinery, significant rail & transportation operations, and of course all of the businesses that support these industries. But even with all of this opportunity, we are neither rich nor prosperous. In fact, we are flat broke and drowning in debt. Last year alone the taxpayers of Prince George paid $9.4MILLION just to "service" our debt! That's not paying it down, that's simply to "service" it and that was with record low interest rates. We all know interest rates are drastically rising so that number could easily double this year without spending another penny. That would be $18.8 MILLION just to "service" our debt. Imagine having a credit card where the minimum payment was $18.8 Million dollars! It is clear that the path we are on is unacceptable, irresponsible, and unsustainable. But here's the good news...there is hope!
If we act now, and it's imperative that we do, we can take back our city and put ourselves on a path to prosperity! It won't be easy and it will take much more than a little "tweaking", our city needs BIG CHANGE and that's exactly what I intend to deliver! I will Cut The Fat at our bloated city hall, my Fat Cat Rollback Plan will finally hold the comfortable and highly paid senior management (AKA the fat cats) accountable , my 4-Point Plan to Clean up our Downtown is a plan that can actually work, I will work with law enforcement to Prioritize our Policing and make our communities safe, and lastly I will focus on getting our city Back to the Basics of what a municipal government should be - a lean, mean, infrastructure and service providing machine. We have to achieve operational excellence at the very basics, like actually completing key infrastructure projects on time and on budget before anything else.
Make no mistake - my campaign will make many of the elites on council and in city hall (along with their friends outside of city hall) very uncomfortable. They are going to fight tooth and nail to keep me out of the mayor's chair - but I will fight harder! And with the people of Prince George as the wind in my sail, we will win, we will remind the elites that they are the public servants and it is the people who are the masters, and we will make Prince George the richest and most prosperous city in the nation!
