Some of the highest paid people in the entire city of Prince George are those who work for the city of Prince George - the senior executives whom I refer to as the "Fat Cats". Multi-multi-hundred thousand dollar salaries, some soaring past "Doctor Pay" and for what? Great Performance? Incredible results? Not that I've seen!
So why do I refer to the very highly tax-paid yet unelected officials as fat cats? Because the resemblance is uncanny! These are the people sitting at the nicest desks, in the most comfortable chairs, on the cushy climate controlled executive floor of city hall. They are completely comfortable with seemingly no worries in the world. Accountability, what's that? Consequences, what are those? Whether their performance is great or absolutely terrible, you can count on one thing for certain - these fat cats are getting fed. NOT ANYMORE!
My Fat Cat Rollback Plan will finally hold these executives accountable and will align their pay with their performance - period. Using the current city manager's public salary of approximately $260,000/year, here is how my plan works:
The Current Situation:
The city manager gets his huge guaranteed salary (more than a quarter million a year) no matter what. If he costs the tax payers 10's upon 10's of millions of dollars in preventable blunders? No problem, he gets paid. Meets none of his key objectives? No problem, he gets paid. Misses all of his performance targets? No problem, he gets paid. The only 2 jobs in this world where you can get it wrong every single day and still be gainfully employed - the weather network and the City of Prince George. This must change!
Fat Cat Rollback Plan:
We rollback the guaranteed salary from $260,000 to a much more modest and reasonable $100,000. We then provide an opportunity for a quarterly bonus (that's 4 times a year) of $50,000 ONLY IF the said manager is performing and achieving desirable outcomes. In this example, the city manager could make $300,000, a $40,000 increase IF he's firing on all cylinders and posting incredible results. But if he is not performing and instead costing the tax payers millions of dollars in preventable errors, he will be living off his modest base salary of $100,000. Perhaps with $200K of their own skin in the game, and not just millions upon millions of tax payer dollars to blunder away, these fat cats will be motivated to actually do their jobs and do them right!
And make no mistake, those who consistently fail to adequately perform their duties will be terminated and replaced with a more suitable individual - just like every other employer in the world...except of course the weather network.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about providing great pay but it must be in exchange for great work and great results. And for the record, I don't give a rat's behind what the manager of Kamloops makes, what the manager of Nanaimo makes, or the manager of any other city in the world makes. It is irrelevant - this is Prince George and we are going to pay for performance.
