The City of Prince George is in critical condition. The unfortunate reality is that year after year of terrible performance by our mayor, council, and senior management has left us on financial life support. It's quite simple, we cannot continue to spend - or in many unfortunate cases flush down the toilet - more money than we are collecting. It's simply not feasible and it's certainly not sustainable. So what can we do?
Well there are really only two options; we can either drastically raise taxes on the people of Prince George who are already struggling to make ends meet, or, we can significantly reduce spending until we get to a much more healthy financial position. I support the latter option.
This means we will need to narrow our focus on the "must haves" and unfortunately will have the shelf many of the "would be nice to haves". A few examples:
Must Haves:
-Clean drinking water
-Quality Roads
-Functioning sewage systems
-Prompt & efficient snow removal
Would be Nice to Haves:
-Flower pots on every light pole
-New "Welcome to PG" Signage - oops they've already got this one wrong!!
-$760,000 bathroom - oops they've already got this one wrong too!!
-Non-functional cosmetic improvements at civic facilities
We have to achieve operational excellence at the most basic level before we can take on anything else. This means we must get back to the basics of what a municipal government should be; a lean, mean, efficient, infrastructure and service providing machine. This includes completing key infrastructure projects on time & on budget. Until then, we will be forced to put some lesser important projects on the shelf, sorry but we're broke! This is not an ideal situation to be in, yet thanks to our current leadership here we are. But it can absolutely be corrected! With strong discipline and laser focus, we can get our city back on financial track and we will position ourselves for a prosperous future!
